People in remote and underserved communities worldwide will have the chance to experience and participate in debates at ITU’s flagship ITU Telecom World 2011 event (24-27 October), thanks to a collaboration with Telecentre.org Foundation, an independent Philippines-based NGO which supports the global telecentre movement.

Impact of Information and Communications Technology for Communities in Crisis
Donors and implementers who assisted Chileans in the aftermath of the 2010, 8.8-magnitude earthquake recently stood on stage at an event in Santiago organized by the Telecentre.org Foundation in front of representatives from 50 telecentre networks of 100 countries, to share ways information and communication technologies (ICT) helped ease the pain of the disaster.

Third Global Forum on Telecentres – Chile 2011
The Third Universal Telecentre.org conference was held and organized by Chile 2011 under the theme of “Employability, Productivity, and Empowerment at the Grassroots Level” from the 5th till the 7th of this month where people from 50 networks in more than 100 countries around the world came to participate in such a grand event. The global campaign aims to help empower a big mass of disadvantaged and underserved community women with knowledge and skills on information and communications technology for personal growth and expanded opportunities for better lives.

UN forms partnership to train women on computer use to boost livelihoods
The United Nations telecommunications agency today partnered with a Philippines-based non-governmental organization (NGO) to train a million women worldwide to use computers and other information and communications technology (ICT) applications to improve their livelihoods.

- Gov’t to support Telecentres
The Minister in the Office of the President in charge of ICT, Dr. Ignace Gatare, has said that the government will support Rwanda Telecentre Network (RTN) towards the setting up of 1,000 community tele-centres countrywide, before the end of 2015. Attending a meeting with the RTN members, Dr. Basheerhamad Shadrach, the Executive Director of Telecentre.org foundation based in Manila, Philippines, said that he is confident that 1,000 tele-centres in Rwanda will be a successful.

- IGNOU’s New Course in Tele-Centre Management
The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the Telecentre.org Foundation have entered into a unique collaboration to design and deliver a certificate programme in Telecentre/Village Knowledge Centre Management (CTVM) aiming to build the capacity of rural youths in the country to manage their telecentres effectively.

- Colombo University’s School of Computing to host eLearning Platform of Telecentre.org Academy
A subsidiary of the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) is to host and maintain eLearning Platform of Global Telecentre.org Academy. Telecentre.org was instrumental in creating telecentre networks in about 70 countries with more than 15 of them now functioning as vibrant and dynamic networks that impact the way information, services and opportunities are offered to remote populace and the marginalized sections of the society.

- University Agreement between Theekshana and Telecentr.org Foundation
Theekshana, which had been set up by University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) to handle its International and Local donor funded consultancies signed an agreement with Telecentre.org Foundation to host and maintain eLearning Platform of Global Telecentre.org Academy on 3rd of June, 2010. Prof. Gihan Wikramanayake Director UCSC who is also the chairman of its company signed the agreement on behalf of Theekshana and Dr. Basheerhamad Shadrach, Executive Director signed on behalf of Telecentre.org Foundation.

- Launch of Telecentre Management Course
The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU represented by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. V N Rajashekharan Pillai) in partnership with the Telecentre.org Foundation (represented by Dr. Basheerhamad Shdarach) announces the launch of first ever university certified course on Telecentre Management. It is Telecentre managers, workers and operators capacity building program in India and it will be replicated in many national academies in the world. Through this unique program, IGNOU and Telecentre.org Foundation desire to train 500,000 grassroots level knowledge workers and village level entrepreneurs spread across the entire country.

- In Colombia took place the National meeting of ICT, development and digital culture
Participating at the ‘National Meeting of ICT’ which took place in Colombia in 30th June- 1st July 2010, Basheerhamad Shadrach, Executive Director of the Telecentre.org Foundation, explained that since the project of telecentres of the Foundation was launched in 2005, they have produced more than 45 telecentres networks, organized more than sixty meetings in different places of the world, and produced tools such as helpdesks in many countries, knowledge exchange portals, digital libraries and magazines production.

Addressing the 7th Convention of the Grameen Gyan Abhiyan (Rural Knowledge Movement) on Information Communication Technology and Food, Health and Livelihood Security: the two-day event at the University of Mumbai concluded on Sunday, 28th November 2010, Dr. Basheerhamad Shadrach, executive director, Telecentre.org Foundation, reiterated the government had to “think beyond its bureaucracies and systems” and come up with out-of the-box approaches to implement telecentres.
