Sri Lanka Telecentre Family Network Makes it Easy to Provide ICT Training

The Sri Lanka Telecentre Family Network has developed a free guide for telecentres that simplifies the process of registering to provide information and communications technology (ICT) courses and provides them with government certification and access to funding.

The ICT course registrion process has many steps with different government agencies. Each telecentre operator who wants to provide ICT training must register their centre with the local government, register their course with the ministry of tertiary education and vocational training, and sit for an exam administered by the NAITA in order to get accreditation for their centre.
"Registration process is time consuming," said R.A.Rubasinghe, Deputy Director of Ministry of Vocational and Technical Training, "but if you are working with the Telecentre Family Network it will be easy for you because they will guide you through the process & they are having relationship with us."

In addition to the guide, the Telecentre Family Network sells ICT course modules for telecentres to offer to their communities. These modules were developed by Mr. Prabath Amarasinghe — a Lecturer of Ministry of Education and Higher Education (Informal Education Division) and Chairman of PC & Network Solutions (Pvt) Ltd. — and are recommended by Ministry of Vocational and Technical Training.

Telecentres that go through the registration process benefit in two important ways. They have Government-approved courses and their students, after they pass their final exam, receive a certificate from the Ministry of Vocational and Technical Training.

The Telecentre Family Network strengthens all telecentre operators in Sri Lanka by providing support and services, including mobile banking, agricultural information services, and ICT course curricula. It’s mission is to create social entrepreneurs who are socially, economically, technologically, ecologically empowered to promote sustainable development. The Family Network is a public-private partnership, bringing together the government’s Nenasalas (administered by the ICTA, Sri Lanka’s Information Communication Technology Agency) and Sarvodaya’s community-based telecentres. The network is supported by telecentre.org, a collaborative initiative funded by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Microsoft, and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
