The East African Staff Exchange meeting presently taking place in Kampala has recommended imediate launch of an award to improve telecentre presence in the region. The "Bytes For Development" award is based on the belief and realization that telecentre practitioners are knowledgeable and skilled given their day to day work.

The main intention of the award is to "activate, strengthen and reward practioners who are purposley and continuously exchanging knowledge, skills and experience through WEB 2.0 tools and other online platforms"

The proposed categories are Best Researcher, Best Trainer, best blogger and best story.

A jury made up of seven members has been proposed. This will be drawn from UgaBYTES, telecetre.org and one member each from the five member countries.

The jury will nominate articles on a monthly basis and also invite the community to make comments on these articles and to nominate other stories which have not been selected by the jury.

Short listing will of three finalists in each category will be conducted by end of January. All shortlisted persons will be invited to attend the East African Telecentre leaders Forum.
