Uganda Development Services (UDS) registered a couple of achievements hinged on library services for 2007 examination results.
Mayanja Mathias a former student of Busoga College Mwiri who excelled with 20 points in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics at his advanced level, could not wait to narrate how UDS library played part.
"My school has a well equipped library, however, no one is allowed to go home with a library book, this was always a problem," Mayanja explains.
"We are given lots of assignments to be done during holidays, as though that is not taxing enough, we were expected to do exams in the second week of the new term. This always proved a big problem until I came to know UDS Library through my brother Alex, who is now at university. Apart from the availability of good books, I found the reading space and environment conducive," he adds.
During holidays, students from various schools use the library; this was a window of opportunity Mayanja exploited to his advantage through group discussions.
"Group discussions exposed me to lots of techniques for example, question interpretation and approach. The silent library annex allowed us to brainstorm with comfort,” Mayanja says.
Good performance is what guardians expect from students. However, the level of performance matters if parents are to be proud; this takes a combination of factors, good advice inclusive. Mayanja gives special recognition and thanks to Ruth Ssebugya Nabukalu, the UDS librarian who always asked them to be focused and goal oriented in what ever they did.
“I always consulted and took her advice, I am glad it has paid off” a happy Mayanja adds, as excess joy robs him of words. Mayanja is among the many library clients who excelled; he intends to do Human medicine at University.
