According to the World Economic Forum’s, Global Information Technology Report 2007–2008, Sri-Lanka has moved to 79 rank out of 127 nations in terms of the most networked economies in the world in its Networked Readiness Index. In the 2006 – 2007 Report, Sri Lanka had been ranked 86 out of 122 nations and ranked 83 out of 115 nations in the 2005–2006 report. The index was compiled based on assessments on an individual nation's market, political and regulatory framework, infrastructure and on individual, business and government readiness and usage. Denmark was top ranked on the index followed by Sweden, Switzerland, the United States and Singapore while the African nation of Chad came in last. The United Kingdom was ranked at 12 while India was ranked at 50.
The Government Leaders Forum – Asia draws huge international crowd at Jakarta, Indonesia
Education, Healthcare and Sustainable Development comes under the spotlight during this years’ Government Leaders Forum (GLF) at Jakarta, Indonesia. The forum focuses on ‘Serving the citizen: The transformative power of information technology in delivering government services’. More than 100 delegates and guest speakers from Asian countries and around the world, including the UK, the Middle East, Denmark, the US, Austria, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Turkey and Nigeria will attend the two-day event scheduled between 8th and 9th May 2008.
Trimble agriculture manager system to improve operational productivity
A Web-based Agriculture Manager asset management system was introduced by Trimble that combines Global Positioning Systems (GPS), machine sensors and automated wireless communications that allows farmers to efficiently manage and operate large machinery fleets. The Agriculture Manager system is part of Trimble's Connected Farm suite of information management tools.
India: IIT graduates plan to revolutionise rural telecom
Two students from IIT Kharagpur have developed a network for telecommunication infrastructure, which can connect remote parts of the country effectively. The telecom infrastructure called KRANTI (Kiosks in Rural Areas Network and Telecommunication Infrastructure) aims to provide cheap, asynchronous and hybrid Internet (Internet having delay) to the Indian villagers. The infrastructure consists a small box equipped with a single low-power embedded processor, specifically meant for network deployments. The box acts as a kiosk-controller and is a proprietary product of US based Soekris Inc. The students have used a kiosk in buses and rail to carry information. One of the kiosk controller (Soekris) can be planted in the bus, the other placed inside the kiosk.
First prison community radio station streams live in Carribean
This is the first time and only prison community radio station launched in the Carribean. The free prison community radio/community multimedia centre is developed to enhance prisoner rehabilitation and education in Jamaica. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has launched the community radio station in partnership with the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and Student Expressing Truth (SET). With the support of UNESCO's International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC), the Department of Correctional Services is now piloting the first phase of the project to establish a Prison Radio Network.
Philippines Government launches P45-million e-portal
The National Computer Center of Philippines has launched the P45-million Philippine Government e-Services Portal called "eSerbisyo.gov.ph" or "eSerbisyo". The department has contracted Total Information Management Corp. (TIM) to built the portal, which will serve as a one-stop, all-in-one Internet gateway for accessing comprehensive information and online front line services of multiple government agencies. eSerbisyo has an interface to the e-Payment Gateway, known as 'eBayad' allowing electronic payments to government agencies through credit cards, debit instructions, and mobile wallets.
India, Finland sign pact
India has signed an agreement with Finland to provide a broad based framework of cooperation in the areas of research and development and innovation policies between the two countries with renowned cutting-edge technologies. Kapil Sibal, Union minister of science & technology and earth sciences and Mauri Pekkarinen, Finnish minister of economic affairs, signed the agreement in Helsinki. The partnership will set up an innovation industrial R&D fund, which will enable technology access to market for mutual benefit of the people of India and Finland.
