All the efforts in the past to close the digital divide and bring the benefits of development to the countryside have come into fruition at the 4th Knowledge Exchange Conference on Community eCenters (KEC4) held on April 3-4, 2008 at The Heritage Hotel Manila in Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City. Two hundred fourteen participants composed of conference delegates, guests, resource persons, and organizers attended the two-day conference.
Aptly themed ‘Engaging Communities in knowledge-based development’, the KEC4 marked an important milestone in the country’s commitment to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) as well as the pursuit of the World Summit on Information Society Plan of Action (WSIS). Alongside the conference five historic events took place, namely:
(1) signing of an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Commission on
Information and Communication Technology (CICT) and the Philippine CeC Network
(PhilCeCNet) partners
(2) the launch of Philippine Community eCenter Roadmap 2008-2010
(3) the launch of Philippine Community eCenter Portal (www.philcecnet.ph)
(4) the launch of telecentre.org-Philippine Community eCenter Academy, and
(5) the launch of the Philippine Community eCenter Network (PhilCeCNet).
Through these efforts, CICT and its partners from knowledge and information industry, and the local communities are committed to championing the social and economic development through the Philippine CeC Program. PhilCeCNet is one of the telecentre networks funded and supported by telecentre.org.
Regarded as the highlight of a series of knowledge exchange conferences that started in November 2005, the conference aims to enable knowledge sharing across CeCs in the country and to discuss the major components of the Philippine CeC Roadmap. The KEC4brought together key players in the Philippine CeC movement and increase the collaboration among the PhilCeC Network partners and members.
