“I am delighted to inform you that Burundi Community Telecentre Network (BCTN)has been legally registered to operate in Burundi” wrote Jean Paul Nkurunziza, the BCTN chairperson to the UgaBYTES mailing list.
Discussions on the legality of telecentre networks in East Africa took centre stage during the first ever network leaders exchange programme hosted by UgaBYTES in February 2008. For networks to access funding, registration was paramount.
Network leaders however concurred that registration takes place within the next three months. It is great to see that the discussions have started bearing fruit. Below is Nkuruziza’s email sent to the mailing list

I am delighted to inform you that Burundi Community Telecentre Network (BCTN) has been legally registered to operate in Burundi. That has been done just today morning July 11th 2008. Indeed, I went to the Ministry of Interior and Communal Development today and found that our organization was listed in newly registered organizations. Our registration number is 530/723 of 11/07/2008.

Some days ago, I gave some more documents to the Advicer of the Director General of the Minister (including IDRC Pamphet on TC.ORG, Telecentre Times and l’Heure des Télécentres newspapers, etc…) after we had about an hour of discussion : I was explaining to him about community telecentres and
how our network won’t be a for profit organization as he had suspected.
After this, the Advisor went on to advocate in favor of BCTN in the ministerial commission in charge of the issue.

Thanks a lot to all the telecentre community world wide of your support in this fight !
