Hope you are already aware that Sri Lanka is going to host the Asia's premier ICT event for this year, e-Asia 2009 in Colombo from 2nd to 4th of December 2009.
The four main domains of the conference are already being selected and finalized by the organizing committee as e-Government, e-Health, e-Education, and Telecentres. Further, Organizing committe has decided to have a fifth track in eAsia 2009 as well. Organizing committee together with expertise in IT has titled this fifth track as "Emerging eTechnologies". This fifth track is carefully being selected to accommodate innovative eTechnological advancements in areas which are not being covered by the above mentioned four main domains. I'm sure, all of you may have your own ideas, suggestions for this fifth track. What are the subject areas, subject matters that you would like to discuss under this fifth track? Please share your views with us on different subject areas and subject matters which you think that can fit into this fifth track. All your ideas, suggestions and contributions will enrich the fifth track and warmly welcome in advance :)
Thank you

Since everything is centred around 'e' the fifth area can consider
e-agriculture, e-culture, e-business, and e-communities and innovative applications, solutions and case studies. One important aspect would be local language technologies contribution for development of all 'e' things. Extra to discussions it would be ideal if e-asia facilitates exhibition of solutions that are replicable.

I personally feel that it can be better if the focus is directed to e-education/ learning and also e-health.
I feel they would be better aspects to look at and to design for.
thanks

Area that I think would be interesting for the fifth track are the following:

--e-Business
--e-Games
--e-Implications and Innovations for the Future
--e-Cultures and Networking
--e-Brain Research Research on reading strategies for e-reading. The strategies are different from reading fiction or magazines. Brain research would validate many practices for improving e-communications.
I would love to attend the ICT event. How do I find information on the cost, etc?

Hello Seuwandi, thank you for your prompt. My view on this topic goes in two directions: I have to agree with Niranjan that developing local language content and local content in general is a key use of all of the 'e'lectronic technologies that make up ICT. My observations of ICT4D is that it is primarily supply side driven. Shifting the use of ICT to demand side, or local content creation and knowledge bases (wikis) changes the playing field and creates wealth and value at the grass roots level. This is generally referred to as Web 2.0, and I see very little use of this already emerging technology. Even the foremost web 2.0 applications such as Twitter are still revealing new and unexpected results, and will continue to for years to come.
Secondly, the most disruptive emerging technology, pedagogically, is the immersive internet: namely virtual worlds and augmented reality. I do not see anyone using these technologies for ICT4 Emergent Development.

Jan

Movie looks good. But it would be great if some real time practices in between 2005-2010 can be shown in the video. Congratulation to telecentre.org and the initiators for building and surviving this powerful knowledge platform.
