Telecentre Women Digital Literacy Campaign Shines at the eAsia Awards Night 2011

Telecentre.org Foundation's Tess Camba, Director of Operations with Sherif El-Tokali, Member of the Board of Trustees, with their Award for the Best Affordable Initiative for Rural Connectivity at the eAsia 2011 Awards Night

The Telecentre Women: Digital Literacy Campaign, a joint initiative of Telecentre.org Foundation and the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) bagged an award at the e-Asia awards night today (02 December) in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
e-Asia Awards night was jointly organized by the Bangladesh Computer Council, support to Digital Bangladesh (a2i), Prime Minister’s office and CSDMS, India. The awards night was witnessed by the distingushed guests including the Honorable Minister for Planning and Honorable Minister for Science and Information and Communication Technology and organized as part of eAsia 2011, one of the Asia’s premier ICT events.
The Telecentre Women: Digital Literacy Campaign was recognized as the Best Affordable Initiative for Rural Connectivity under the theme ‘Connecting People’. Representing Telecentre.org Foundation, Director of Operations, Maria Teresa Camba received the award during the event held at the Bangadandu International Conference Centre.
The eAsia 2011 Awards have been instituted with the primary aim of felicitating and acknowledging unique and innovative initiatives in the use of information and communication Technology for Development (ICT4D). The award categories have been chosen in alignment with the five themes of the conference: Building Capacity, Connecting People, Serving Citizens, Driving Economy and Breaking Barriers. Among 38 finalists, 17 awards were given in the gala event held on this evening.
The Telecentre Women: Digital Literacy Campaign is a global initiative to help empower the big mass of disadvantaged and under-served community women with knowledge of information and communications technology for personal growth and expanded opportunities for better lives. It leverages the combined reach of telecentre.org Foundation’s global network of 300 organizations, 100,000grassroots telecentres worldwide and over 200,000 individuals with direct stakes in the telecentre movement with ITU’s 192 Member States and 700 Sector Members.
