RASULI KANWAR KHAN TRUST

AN INTRODUCTION NOTE:

1. Origin:

Idea of this trust has its origin in birth of Kanwar Khan as first son of Haji Ghamman Khan in 1902. Haji Gamman was the single inheritor of seven generation of single sons. Kanwar Khan married Rasuli in 1927 and together they had five children. Love and care which Rasuli and Kanwar Khan provided to their five children was exemplary. Kanwar Khan provided father’s umbrella in which all the household felt secure and Rasuli provided love and warmth which kept the family as a single unit much after they both passed away. In memory of both their parents/grand parents the founders wish to start the trust.

Whereas, it is the desire and the pious wish of the “Founders” to create a trust, to run and maintain one or more Educational and Development Institutions in Mewat for Education, Research and Development ,open to all without any restriction of age, religion or language, nationality, sex, case or social status.

2. Aims & Objectives:

 Using methods learned from the corporate world to bring about mass scale changes using rural Mewat as base and then expand the learnings across the Globe.
 Making change felt at a mass scale and in a manner that can have a fundamental effect on the communities involved around the world.

5. Project Area :

The Mewat district remains an economically and socially backwards area in the otherwise comparatively wealthy and progressive state of Haryana. The Mewat district is divided in six blocks and has total area of 197 sq. kms. It has 503 villages and approximately 1.2 million populations. 93 % people are living in rural area. The socio economic conditions of all the six blocks are quite similar. It suffers from natural resource constraints, including low and erratic rainfall, lack of water resources, and prevalence of sodic lands, brackish underground water and low agricultural productivity. The majority of people are dependent on agriculture for their livelihood but land holding is small and farmer’s productivity is low. Support system in terms of modern knowledge about agricultural practices, crop diversifications, availability of good quality inputs, food grain storage, poor market linkages are major issues in enhancing the productivity of the farmer’s community. This has made the people of Mewat region perpetually poor and induced in them sense of insecurity to take risk and explore their vision. All other problems like gender inequality, illiteracy, poor health conditions, high infant mortality rate etc are mainly because of failure on above fronts.

6. Activities:

RKK Trust began its activities in Mewat in the year 2005 - 06. We started with a situation analysis of Nagina Block of Mewat district to understand the ground reality and based on the finding of the above study we had organized a stakeholder meet to further validate the findings. Through these initiatives we have identified four main issues i.e. water, unemployment, literacy and health and structured our program accordingly.

The current status of our activities is given below -

6.1:Education:
Overall literacy of the Mewat in 2003 was 23%.Female literacy was only 2%.
So education was the natural area which needed addressing on urgent basis.

6.1.1:Basic Education:

RKK Trust has tied up with Pratham for the elementary education.
In Spring 2005,we started first classes with the help of Pratham trained, unpaid volunteers. The community response was instant. This gave us confidence that community was ready for change.
In last three years Pratham has provided literacy to over 20,000 children and they have been mainstreamed.
In ASER Jan 2008 report,we now have confirmation that 85% of children in the age range of 6 to14 are going to school and leaning well.

6.1.2: Girl Child Education:

In April 2007, we launched education program for the girl child in the age group of 14-18 years who have never been to school. These girls were given six month long duration training in literacy and numeracy. By March 2008 had trained 512 girls from seven villages.

From April 2008 we are training around 300 girls every six months.
All of this programme is being done in collaboration with community. The girls from this programme not only learn reading and writing ,they also learn craft training and graduate as entrepreneurs with confidence to face life as responsible girls who act as change agents in the family.

6.1.3: Computer & English learning:

Mewat has 30-40% unemployment. Most of these are educated youth with mis-matched educational qualifications which are not fit for job market.

Opened Rural Information Centre (RIC) in Nagina in Block. The RIC has 2500 sq feet covered are and 5000 sq feet open lawn and it is fully equipped with computer, internet, projector, screen, printer, fax copier, scanner and three training halls.

4
In July 2008 we have started to teach computers and along with this we are adding English teaching so these youth can find work in BPO and related industries in nearby Gurgaon and other job centres where there is shortage of skilled youth.

6.2: Livelihood:

At present 40 youths are undergoing six month long duration computer training program at the RIC.
All girls are undergoing training in tailoring / stitching and sanitary napkin making.

320 women have been trained in sewing and stitching activities and now they are engaged in stitching of their garments and earning their livelihood.

In collaboration with HUL, 45 women have been selected as the Shakti dealers of HUL and now they are earning average Rs, 2000 per month.

EDP training has been given to 425 youths and facilitated in setting up their income generation activities in coordination with Banks and Corporate Houses.

A model Horticulture Demonstration Farm has been developed at Village Beria Baas with the purpose to show case latest farm technology. 30 farmers group have been formed from ten villages. 450 farmers are linked to these groups. The farmers are supported in diversification, crop management, and procurement of good planting material, post harvest management and market linkages.

Organized Design Workshop in collaboration with IILM, Gurgaon for the women engaged in changeri basket making (local craft) with the purpose to help the women in design improvement and product diversification. Fifty women took part and benefitted as a result of the workshop.

6.3:Health :
Organized eight eye camp in Mewat district through which over 2000 people were scanned , advised, given medical and conducted over 265 cataract surgery free of cost. The program is continuing in the current year and we plan to conduct at least 500 cataract surgeries this year as well.
Provided training in family life education, personal hygiene, nutrition etc to over 400 adolescent girls.
Participated in pulse polio program and facilitated vaccination of over 10,000 children last two years in collaboration with Health Department of Mewat District. Provided health education to 500 girls

5
6.4: Water:
Water is one of the key issues in Mewat as 70 % area has brackish ground water. We have conducted a geohydrological survey of about 20 villages to understand their under ground water regime. This has helped villagers to understand their ground water resources. The data is helping villagers to make use of optimum utilization of their ground water resources and also recharging the same for their long term sustainability.

Training has been given to 300 villagers in rain water harvesting and water management. Motivated villagers and linked them to NREGA scheme for deepening of ponds as results 15 ponds were dug up in ten villages to harvest the rain water.

We have selected Nainagla from Nagina block with the view to develop its as a model village in terms of making it self sufficient by means of rain water harvesting. The plan is being developed in close coordination with the Panchayat and the community.
