Telecentre.org Foundation and the Department of Communication of the Republic Government of South Africa, in supporting its e-Skills Institute, have agreed to collaborate to strengthen and expand e-skills development across South Africa and the African Continent, which includes the introduction of Telecentre.org Academy courses to develop the capacity of South Africa’s telecentre stakeholders. The Agreement is also expected to signify the participation of South Africa in the implementation of needs-based, pro-poor services initiatives such as the Telecentre Women: Digital Literacy Campaign.
Dr. Harold M. Wesson, Acting Director-General of the Department of Communications and Dr. Basheerhamad Shadrach, Executive Director of Telecentre.org Foundation are the signatories to the Agreement, which was signed on May 31, 2011. According to Dr. Shadrach, “This partnership is a landmark achievement for the Telecentre.org Foundation on three counts: First, this enables the Foundation to collaborate with the government towards strengthening the telecentre movement in South Africa, a nation that is so important in the telecentre landscape. Second, through this partnership, we are likely to strengthen our work in the entire continent, where we hope to be able to introduce eLearning objects relevant to the cultural settings of Africa. Finally, it is our desire that the partnership may allow us to work closely with Cisco whose tools such as WebEx make it easier for Telecentre.org Academy learners to indulge in collaborative learning.”
